Saddle Lake Cree Nation Asserts Its Sovereignty Following Ratification of FIPA
Today Saddle Lake Cree Nation sent this letter to People’s Republic of China and the Government of Canada. Hupacasath First Nation is grateful for their lead and vision and encourage other First Nations to do the same.
Canadians can approach their City Councils and ask them to follow suit as municipalities’ power to protect their citizens will be overridden by the Canada-China FIPA.
Especially those municipalities who have taken a stand and barred Kinder Morgan and Enbridge’s Northern Gateway from pipelines entering their jurisdiction.
Together we must make it clear to China that the Government of Canada did not follow due process by consulting First Nations, Parliament and the citizens of Canada. We need to stand together and say NO!
(Candi M Desjarlais, Shannon Houle and Janice Makokis authored the letter for Chief Leonard Jackson and they are encouraging other treaty nations to do the same. SLCN support Brenda Sayers and the nation for the work they have done and encourage it be shared as much as possible.)
